When a child is having problems at home or at school the parents (and even the teacher) may feel quite confused. "Why is this happening?" I am often asked. The parent wonders, is it my child, the school, or our home that is the issue?
While I've seen some difficult school settings & miraculous results from simply moving a child from one school to another, often there is no single clear or easy answer to a child’s problem. There is, however, an answer. It just needs to be uncovered. This can be done through therapy, assessment or consultation.
Children function within a context – be it family, peer, or classroom. When a parent comes to me with a concern, I collect information from the parents, the child & often (if appropriate) the school. If needed, learning styles can be obtained through neurological testing. Whether testing is needed and/or the extent of the assessment is determined on an individual basis.
After the learning, behavioral and/or contextual issues are identified, suggestions for interventions are presented to the parents. If there is a school related issue, Dr. Kumar can also advocate within the school setting for the child or help the parents formulate a plan themselves.
